Island Drug / LaConner Drug's Commitment to Lower Health Care Costs

Use Your Flexible Spending Account Debit Card at Island Drug / LaConner Drug

A flexible spending account (FSA) is an IRS Approved benefit plan set up with your employer/insurer. It allows you to voluntarily withhold a portion of your paycheck and use those pre-tax dollars to pay for approved health care expenses before your taxes are taken out. Contributing to your FSA is a terrific way to reduce your taxable income and save money on your health care.

Here's how it works

  1. You determine how much money to automatically deduct from your paycheck.
  2. Your pre-tax dollars go into an account managed by your insurance company (accessed
    only by you).
  3. For in-store purchases only - Pay with your FSA card Credit/Debit and your account is automatically deducted. There is no need to submit receipts.

Your Island Drug / LaConner Drug receipt will identify the total of qualified health care products with a ”FSA Total” towards the bottom of the receipt.

The virtual receipt that is displayed at the cash register counter will display each item that is FSA Eligible with an "FSA" to the right of each item, and will also display a sub total at the bottom.

Many health-related items you regularly buy qualify under most
FSA plans:

  • Aids to quit smoking
  • Antibiotic ointments
  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Contact lenses and solutions
  • Diabetes test strips
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Non-prescription aspirin and pain relievers

Frequently Asked Questions

What does FSA mean?

FSA stands for flexible spending account. An FSA allows you to voluntarily withhold a portion of your paycheck to pay for approved health care expenses. The funds you put in your flexible spending account are deducted from your wages before taxes are taken out, meaning you'll have less income to report when it's time to file your taxes — and have more money in your pocket.

How do I know which products are FSA-qualified?

When you shop at a Island Drug / LaConner Drug store, your receipt will identify the FSA-eligible items with an ”FSA” to the right of the item on the Virtual Receipt displayed on the cash register monitors, and your paper receipt will also provide a subtotal of the FSA-eligible purchases. The Shelf Labels throughout the store that display the price will have FSA Eligible in purple like this sample:

Items that meet the above criteria are flagged as eligible in the store item file. When an FSA card is used to purchase items, Island Drug / LaConner Drug's registers will make the determination on which items meet the eligibility requirements based on IRS guidelines. Items that meet the eligible requirements will be charged to the FSA card. Non-eligible items must be paid with another form of payment.

How do I pay for health care expenses with my FSA funds?

When shopping at your local Island Drug / LaConner Drug, you simply use a FSA credit/debit card supplied by your health insurer, and the cost of your eligible health care purchases will automatically be deducted from your account. There is no need to send in your receipts.

Alternatively, if you don't have an FSA credit/debit card, save your receipts, which will identify the total of FSA-eligible items purchased with an ”FSA total” near the bottom of the receipt as shown above. Submit the receipts to your insurer, who will reimburse you from your FSA savings (check with your insurer for specific plan rules on manual receipt submission).

What is Island Drug / LaConner Drug's item validation method?

Participating FSA Processors Cards and an eligible item list are maintained within Island Drug / LaConner Drug's system. When a participating card is presented for payment, Island Drug / LaConner Drug's cash registers will only charge the FSA card for the eligible items. Non-eligible items require a payment with cash, check or another form of payment.
